Incorporated in 1974, Afton is an amalgamation of the following rural communities: Cumberland, Fairview, New Dominion, Nine Mile Creek, Rice Point and Rocky Point. "Afton Hall" was built on the New Dominion site in 1897. Funds to build the structure were raised through the sale of shares in the building. Neil Livingstone donated a piece of land (65' x 65') from the Meadow Brook Farm in exchange for four shares. A total of 100 $5.00 shares were sold on the structure. Following in the tradition of earlier community members, John and Dorothy MacEwen donated additional property for the construction of the present "Afton Community Centre" pictured in the left corner above. The new Centre's construction began in 1989 and the building has acted as an active focal point in the community since 1990. The facility was updated in 2009 and 2013 with renovations to the kitchen, main floor and dart room. The kitchen was completely updated with new cabinetry, appliances and the addition of a dishwasher. The Centre boasts ample parking, air conditioning, wheelchair accessibility, state of the art security, a well stocked kitchen and bar facilities. Located on Route 19, the Centre offers card parties, exercise classes, salsa dancing, step dancing classes, Wednesday Darts, the Friday Dart League, Steak Darts and community access to the Internet. |
